This calculator builds your D1 chart, the main birth chart of Vedic astrology, from the actual positions of the planets at your moment of birth. It uses the sidereal zodiac, so the placements will usually differ from a Western chart by about one sign.
For a Moon sign the date is usually enough. For a full chart it is not.
The ascendant is the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon, and the Earth's rotation moves it through a full sign roughly every two hours. Since the houses are counted from the ascendant, an error of a few hours moves every planet into a different house and changes the reading entirely.
The lagna is the first house, and in Vedic astrology it is the anchor of the chart. It describes the body, the outward direction of a life, and it fixes where all the other houses fall.
This is one reason Vedic and Western readings diverge in practice as well as in theory: much of Vedic interpretation runs from the lagna, while much of Western interpretation runs from the Sun.

Vedic astrology uses divisional charts, the vargas, each derived from the main one by subdividing the signs. D1 is the main chart, the rashi chart, and it is what almost everyone means by a birth chart.
The others zoom into particular subjects — D9 for marriage and inner strength, D10 for career — and they are read alongside D1, never instead of it. This calculator returns D1, which is where any reading starts.
They are then said to be conjunct, and the tradition reads them as blending: their significations mix, and the stronger placement colours the weaker. Three or more in one sign is a stellium, and it concentrates a large part of the chart into one area of life.
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, six signs apart, so they never share a sign. If your table shows them together, something is wrong and we would want to know about it.
