Moon sign vs sun sign
One of these signs is what you show. The other is what you feel.

Western astrology leads with the Sun. Vedic astrology leads with the Moon. They are not arguing, they are reading different layers.

Moon sign vs sun sign

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun occupied when you were born. It is the one you know, the one in the newspaper column. Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at the same moment. In Vedic astrology it is called the Janma Rashi, the birth sign, and it is read first.

What is the difference between a moon sign and a sun sign?

The clearest way to hold it: the Sun is the role, the Moon is the reaction.

Both traditions use both bodies. The disagreement is only about which one goes first.

Why is my Vedic moon sign different from my star sign?

Two differences stack, which is why the gap catches people off guard.

Different body. The Sun crosses a sign in a month; the Moon in about two and a half days (every one of those changes is dated here). They are almost never in the same place.

Different zodiac. Western astrology measures against the tropical zodiac, anchored to the spring equinox and therefore to the seasons. Vedic astrology measures against the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars themselves. Those two frames coincided roughly two thousand years ago. The slow wobble of the Earth's axis, called precession, has since opened a gap of about 24 degrees, which is enough to move most placements back by roughly one sign.

So a Western Gemini is often a Vedic Taurus, and their Moon may be somewhere else again.

The 12 Moon signs

Each sign carries an element, a modality and a ruling planet. The Moon also has particular strength or weakness in three of them:

The Moon is exalted in Taurus, with the exact point at 3 degrees, and debilitated in Scorpio at the same degree. Cancer is its own sign. These three placements are singled out in the classical texts and agreed on across schools.

What does your moon sign mean?

Short traditional readings for the Moon in each sign:

Moon in Aries
quick to feel and quick to act, impatient, meets things head on. reacts first and reflects afterwards, and would rather move than wait.
Moon in Taurus
steady, sensual, slow to upset and slow to let go, wants comfort and security. settles into what feels safe and will not be hurried out of it.
Moon in Gemini
restless mind, talks to think, curious, changes mood with the conversation. processes feelings by putting them into words, often several versions of them.
Moon in Cancer
deeply feeling, protective, remembers everything, attached to home and family. takes things personally and keeps the memory of them far longer than others expect.
Moon in Leo
warm, proud, generous, needs to be seen and appreciated. gives generously and is quietly wounded when the gesture goes unnoticed.
Moon in Virgo
analytical, careful, self-critical, calms itself by fixing and ordering. handles worry by finding a task, and finds fault first in itself.
Moon in Libra
wants harmony, weighs both sides, uncomfortable with conflict. delays a decision to avoid upsetting someone, then feels the delay itself as pressure.
Moon in Scorpio
intense, private, feels extremes, guards a hidden inner life. goes through periods of upheaval that reshape it, and rarely shows them while they happen.
Moon in Sagittarius
optimistic, restless, believes in something larger, needs room. reaches for meaning and freedom, and grows short-tempered when confined.
Moon in Capricorn
reserved, responsible, self-contained, matures early. carries weight without mentioning it and mistrusts easy comfort.
Moon in Aquarius
detached, principled, sociable but private, thinks in systems. cares deeply about people in general and keeps distance from people in particular.
Moon in Pisces
absorbent, imaginative, compassionate, boundaries blur easily. picks up the mood of whoever is nearby and cannot always tell it from its own.

Your Moon sign takes about a minute to find. It needs your date and place of birth, and your time if you have it.

Which one should I read?

If you have only ever read Sun-sign horoscopes and they never quite fit, the Moon sign is worth checking, because it is usually a different sign and describes a different layer.

We are not going to tell you one system is right. What we will do is show you exactly where your chart falls in both, and let the reading itself make the case or fail to.

What about compatibility?

Vedic astrology compares Moon signs rather than Sun signs, and it does it through the planets that rule them. The full chart of all 144 pairs is on moon sign compatibility, including the 32 pairs where the two people do not read each other the same way.

How does the nakshatra fit in?

Under the 12 signs runs an older and finer division: 27 nakshatras, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide. Your Moon sits in a sign and a nakshatra at the same time, and the nakshatra is the more specific of the two.

A Moon in Aquarius could be in Dhanishta, Shatabhisha or Purva Bhadrapada, and those read very differently despite sharing a sign. The full picture is in the guide to the 27 nakshatras.

Common questions

What is the difference between a moon sign and a sun sign?

The Sun sign is the sign the Sun occupied at your birth and is read for outward identity and vitality. The Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied and is read for mind, emotion and instinct. Western astrology leads with the Sun; Vedic astrology leads with the Moon.

Why is my Vedic moon sign different from my star sign?

Two differences stack. Different body, Sun versus Moon. And different zodiac: Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac anchored to the seasons, Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac anchored to the stars. The gap between them is currently about 24 degrees, which shifts most placements back by roughly one sign.

What does your moon sign mean?

In the Vedic tradition the Moon governs the mind: how you react before you think, what you remember, and what makes you feel safe. The Moon sign is treated as the more private layer of a person, while the Sun describes the role they take in the world.

Is the moon sign more important than the sun sign?

In Vedic astrology it carries more weight, because the timing system and the birth star are both built on the Moon. That is a difference of tradition, not a claim that one is more accurate.

Where these readings come from

The calculation is astronomy and is exact. Elements, modalities, sign rulers and the Moon's dignities follow the classical sources and are standardised across schools.

The character readings are a softer kind of claim, and it is worth saying so. The classical texts are terse here; longer descriptions come from later compilation. What is written above renders those short classical lines in plain words rather than adding detail that was never there.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (planetary dignities; Moon in signs) and Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira (nature of the signs). Element, modality, sign ruler and the Moon's dignity are standardised across schools; the character reading renders the classical lines in plain words.

An honest note on what this is

Astrology here is offered for reflection and self-understanding. It is not prediction, diagnosis or advice, and no outcome is promised. The astronomy behind it is real and calculated; what any of it means is a tradition of interpretation, presented as exactly that.
