Vedic compatibility runs through the planets that rule your Moon signs, and those relationships are deliberately not symmetric.
Western compatibility charts compare Sun signs. Vedic astrology compares Moon signs, because the Moon is what it reads for mind and emotion, and it does the comparison through the planets that rule those signs.
The mechanism has a name: Graha Maitri, the friendship of the planets. Every sign has a ruling planet. The classical texts fix a permanent relationship between each pair of planets. Find the two rulers, look up how they stand, and that is the reading.
Before the chart, the honest limit. Graha Maitri is worth 5 points out of 36 in traditional matching, and it is one of eight factors. It is not a verdict on a relationship and it is not the full system. What it describes is where two temperaments meet easily and where they need translating.
E — easy W — workable F — friction
Read the row as the first person and the column as the second. Where they differ, the pairing is not mutual, and that is the interesting part.

This chart is useless until you know which Moon sign is actually yours. It is usually not the one Western astrology gave you.
Find my Moon signThis is the part that surprises people, and it is not a flaw in the table. The classical relationships run one way at a time. Saturn counts the Moon an enemy; the Moon counts Saturn merely neutral. So the difficulty is real for one person and barely registers for the other.
Anyone who has been in a relationship where one of you thought everything was fine will recognise the shape of it.
| Moon sign | Moon sign | One direction | The other |

There are 32 such pairs in total. In the rest, both sides agree.
Fixed by Parashara, identical in every chart, and unchanged by anything in your own horoscope:
| Planet | Friends | Neutral | Enemies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Jupiter, Mars, Moon | Mercury | Saturn, Venus |
| Moon | Mercury, Sun | Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus | none |
| Mars | Jupiter, Moon, Sun | Saturn, Venus | Mercury |
| Mercury | Sun, Venus | Jupiter, Mars, Saturn | Moon |
| Jupiter | Mars, Moon, Sun | Saturn | Mercury, Venus |
| Venus | Mercury, Saturn | Jupiter, Mars | Moon, Sun |
| Saturn | Mercury, Venus | Jupiter | Mars, Moon, Sun |
The table splits into two camps. The Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter sit together, warm and royal. Mercury, Venus and Saturn sit together, cooler and more worldly. Most of the friction in the chart above is one camp meeting the other.
They answer different questions, and stacking them is more honest than picking one.
The finer layer under all of it is the nakshatra, which divides the same circle into 27.
We do not produce a kundli matching score. Full Ashtakoota matching adds seven more factors to this one and totals 36 points, and it is used mainly for arranged marriages. It is a real system and we have not built it, so we are not going to print a number that looks like it.
What is on this page is one factor, calculated properly, with its weight stated.
Through the planets that rule the two Moon signs. Every sign has a ruling planet, and the classical texts fix a permanent relationship between each pair of planets: friend, neutral or enemy. Compare the two rulers and you have the reading. This is called Graha Maitri, and it is one of the eight factors traditional matching uses.
Because of the zodiac, not the calculation. Western astrology measures against the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinox; Vedic measures against the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars. The two sit about 24 degrees apart, so your Vedic Moon sign is usually the sign before your Western one. That changes the ruling planet, which changes the compatibility answer.
Yes, and the tradition is explicit about it. The planetary relationships are not symmetric. Saturn counts the Moon an enemy, but the Moon counts Saturn merely neutral. So a Cancer Moon may find a Capricorn Moon unremarkable while the Capricorn Moon finds the Cancer Moon difficult. In 32 of the 66 possible pairs the two sides do not match.
No, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling a five-point factor. Graha Maitri is worth 5 points out of 36 in traditional matching, and traditional matching is itself one input among many. It describes where two temperaments meet easily and where they need translating. It does not predict outcomes.
No. Kundli matching, or Ashtakoota, scores eight separate factors out of 36 points and is used mainly for arranged marriages. Graha Maitri is one of those eight. We compute that one factor and say so plainly rather than presenting a score we have not built.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (naisargika maitri, natural planetary friendship), repeated in Phaladeepika. The relationships are fixed and identical in every chart. Note they are not symmetric: Saturn counts Mars an enemy while Mars counts Saturn neutral.
Moon sign positions are computed from JPL DE421 ephemeris data with the True Chitra Paksha ayanamsa applied, the same engine that runs the calculator. Method is set out on how we calculate.
Astrology here is offered for reflection and self-understanding. It is not prediction, diagnosis or advice, and no outcome is promised. Nothing on this page should be used to decide whether to be with someone. The astronomy behind it is real and calculated; what any of it means is a tradition of interpretation, presented as exactly that.
